I am a family photographer based in Salt Lake City Utah. We Photographed the Webb family at the American Fork Amphitheater in Utah County. It is one of my favorite locations in Utah County and they happened to be one of my very favorite families to photograph. I love love love young families.
As a family photographer I learned early on a few things that DEFINITELY didn’t work at my shoots and a few things that really did. I am going to give you a few tips and tricks of what does and doesn’t work.
What to do before your shoot:
1.Make sure EVERYONE is fed and full! It’s no fun taking pictures of people who are Hangry (Hungry angry for those of you who don’t know what that means 🙂 )
2.Have your outfits laid out and ready to go. Mentally prep your kids what they are going to wear a few days before so kids aren’t agitated on the day of the shoot over an outfit they don’t want to wear.
3. Do bring water (I always try to bring water bottles but you can never have enough).
4. Do not bring food for your kids, thus the reason it’s so important kids are fed before the session so they don’t need treats through the session. This wastes your hour of shooting time. There is inevitably stains and drool that happen. This is a hard one. Really hard. But trust me. No goldfish. They stain orange and get in teeth. No fruit snacks, they take a long time to eat and make kids drool. I always have smarties on hand for bribes and breaks. They are the best bribe. Kids naturally pucker with smarties because they are a bit tart and they dissolve and are neutral in color so they don’t interfere too much with shoot time. Also if your child is not cooperating, the smarties at least make them look like so they are not crying ;-). Smarties are a big thumbs up, but I always carry several packs on me so you don’t need to bring any.
5. Prepare to LEAVE your STRESS at HOME! You are paying me to stress FOR YOU! It makes me more stressed if you are stressed. It makes kids miserable and does not create the environment we need to create your priceless memories. I promise promise promise you I will dispel fear, agitation and stress. It’s often my clients whose kids that are really crazy that we end up with the best photographs. My mission is to capture WHO your family is! The perfectly imperfect.
